United Way supported agency. Sugar Grove Developmental Day School (SGDDS) is a nonprofit 501(c)3 corporation, licensed to provide daycare 5 days/week from 7 AM to 6 PM, to 44 children: infants (8 weeks) through kindergarten. SGDDS is the only non-profit daycare in Watauga County, a 5-star Daycare. A Developmental Daycare will follow these general guidelines; 50% of the children need to be typically developing and as many as 50% can be 'at risk'. ('At risk' is defined as adopted, abused, learning disabled, developmental delayed or from a home that is below the poverty level.) In order to meet these goals our day school must meet all the guidelines set forth by Early Childhood Environment Rating Scale (ECERS) and Infant/Toddler Environment Rating Scale (ITERS) for staff, and for both indoor equipment and facilities and outdoor playground areas. SGDDS has occupied the former library addition to the Historic Cove Creek School since June 1, 2004. As evidence of the need for daycare facilities in Watauga County, within a few months of opening, the 'slots' were filled and SGDDS has had a waiting list since. More than half of the children at SGDDS have subsidized child care, again emphasizing the significant need for this facility to serve our low-income rural population. SGDDS is licensed to care for 8 infants and is one of only two licensed daycares in the county that provide infant daycare. The primary sources of income for SGDDS are tuition, donations, and fundraising events. SGDDS provides a sliding fee scale to allow low income working families who don't qualify for subsidy to afford daycare for their children. Both organizations have received no-interest loans from rural economic development funds at Skyline Telephone Cooperative; Cove Creek Preservation & Development (CCP&D) also received a no-interest loan from County funds; SGDDS also received a no-interest loan from Blue Ridge Electric Membership Cooperative. The Janirve Foundation has been a major source of matching funds providing financial support for renovations for both CCP&D and SGDDS. Sugar Grove Developmental Day School (SGDDS) and Cove Creek Preservation & Development (CCP&D) recently received a $15,000 matching grant from the Marion Stedman Covington Foundation of Greensboro NC for replacing the 1950-era windows of the former library of the Historic Cove Creek School building in Western Watauga County. Marion Stedman Covington has a long history of volunteerism and philanthropy and is a leader in the NC historic preservation movement. The two nonprofit organizations, CCP&D and SGDDS jointly sought funding to replace the windows in the daycare with thermopane (for insulation), tempered (for the safety of the children), and tinted glass (for sun shading). The WPA-era rock school has long been recognized as a treasured landmark and is located in the heart of the rural Sugar Grove community. Following its closure as a school facility in 1995, members of the community formed a committee to protect and preserve this cherished area treasure. CCP&D was incorporated in 1996 as a non-profit, 501(c)3 corporation to address issues of community preservation and economic development in the area. The Cove Creek High School is on the National Register of Historic Places. CCP&D & SGDDS sincerely appreciate the $7,500 that the Marion Stedman Covington Foundation provided to replace the windows in the daycare portion of the building. Local organizations that provided funds to match the Covington Foundation grant include the Lovett Foundation of Winston-Salem ($3,750), Skyline Telephone Membership Corporation ($1,250), Church of the Holy Cross – Valle Fair ($1,000), Walmart ($500), Blue Ridge Electric Membership Corporation ($500), Mountaineer Ruritan ($500), and Mast General Store ($250). Additional donations were needed to complete the project since licensing agencies determined that if the windows were replaced, doors must be added as emergency exits, a more expensive item not apparent when the grant application originated. CCP&D, an all-volunteer organization, remains committed to the successful completion of the building restoration and to keeping the Historic Cove Creek High School as a visible symbol of our rural community spirit. SGDDS is committed to providing affordable daycare for our community. Both nonprofit organizations rely on volunteers and donations to continue to provide services to our community. Send your donations reflecting the Christmas spirit to P.O. Box 453, Sugar Grove NC 28679.
